NACIWA President Leads Regional Dialogue on Corruption and Instability in West Africa and Sahel

DAKAR, SENEGAL – The Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) participated in a high-level Arbre-A-Palabres Session today focused on addressing the critical nexus between corruption, sociopolitical crises, and regional instability across West Africa and the Sahel.

The session, organized with support from the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), brought together regional leaders, policymakers, and anti-corruption experts to exchange views on emerging corruption trends and develop collaborative strategies to combat this pervasive challenge.

In his opening address, NACIWA President, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the vital connection between corruption and the broader issues of regional stability and development.

“Corruption not only erodes public trust but also fuels the complex interplay of sociopolitical crises and instability in our communities,” Mr. Olukoyede stated. “The challenges we face are formidable, but they are not insurmountable.”

The dialogue centered on analyzing recent corruption trends highlighted in Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index, with particular attention to West Africa and the Sahel region. Participants explored the intricate linkages between corruption and regional instability while working to articulate practical recommendations for promoting good governance.

NACIWA has been at the forefront of advancing transparency, accountability, and integrity across the region through coordinated efforts among its member institutions. The network remains committed to pragmatic, non-political approaches that emphasize technical solutions and shared best practices.

The session concluded with calls for enhanced collaboration among regional anti-corruption bodies, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and partnership in developing effective strategies to promote sustainable socio-economic development and lasting peace and security throughout West Africa.
